Possible Strategies for Starting the Conversation
Team members solicit invitations to speak at meetings of local civic organizations.
Team accesses time on the local cable networks for a taped program on Sports Done RightTM.
A coalition of 3-4 civic/service groups sponsor - in partnership with the school district - a town meeting forum on sports.
The school district - in cooperation with booster groups - hosts a "spring barbecue" for student-athletes from all sports, their coaches, parents and the public. Following the barbecue, folks are invited inside for an overview of Sports Done RightTM.
The school district and leadership team establishes a companion Student Athletic Council to advise the community/school team on Sports Done RightTM activities.
The leadership team presents an overview of Sports Done RightTM, the initial action plan and its focus, to the local school board.
A comprehensive communication strategy is prepared to ensure community-wide knowledge and continuing communication about Sports Done RightTM.
The school district and leadership conduct a student-athlete survey to gain insight on the views of student-athletes regarding the current athletic program. Use data and comments to begin a discussion with other community groups.
The leadership team asks interested members of the community to become members of an extended leadership team council, creating a wider base of support and awareness.
Display copies of the Sports Done RightTM report in local businesses - i.e., barber shop, doctor's office, fitness club, etc.
Hold a Leadership Academy with a rival school district - inviting students from both schools to discuss leadership and their role in the implementation process.
